🎹 Rhythm Section Session Recap – Aug 24, 2025

Student: Peter Franklin
Rhythm Section: Gonzalo (bass), Dru (drums)
Facilitator: Peter

🌟 Session Focus:

Peter worked on the Wayne Shorter ballad “Infant Eyes”, navigating ultra-slow tempo, harmonic phrasing, ensemble connection, and internal rhythmic grounding. The session centered on developing internal flow and trusting the rhythm section to support the time.

🧠 Key Musical Concepts Explored:

🐢 1. Playing Extremely Slowly

The ensemble slowed “Infant Eyes” down to its absolute limit, creating a space where every beat needed intentional placement.
At this tempo, even small hesitations or inconsistencies created form drift.
Peter worked to breathe, settle, and listen—rather than rush forward out of anxiety or habit.

“Let the rhythm section push you gently into the next bar. Don’t rush it—ride the river.”

🫁 2. Breath & Patience

One of the central breakthroughs came from thinking of each measure as a breath cycle.
Rather than “counting time,” Peter practiced feeling time through embodiment—allowing the trio to carry him, not overthink each entrance.

“Just breathe, listen, and let the chord sit for four full beats before moving.”

✋ 3. Left Hand as Anchor

Some of the session was spent working with left-hand-only voicings to strengthen Peter’s internal sense of form and pulse.
The group emphasized using the LH as an anchor—to sync with the bass and hold form regardless of RH activity.

“Your left hand and Gonzalo’s bass are moving together—sync with that and trust it.”

🧠 4. The Toggle Strategy

Peter was re-introduced to the “toggle switch” concept: a mental shift between awareness of form and creative expression.
Practicing toggling between playing a chord and looking up/listening created more space and allowed new ideas to emerge organically.
This technique helps prevent cognitive overload and opens up creative freedom.

“Toggle—look up, breathe, listen, then play. It’s milliseconds, but it makes all the difference.”

🎶 5. Melody vs. Memory

There were moments when Peter fell into memorized phrases or “scripted” RH solos.
Gonzalo encouraged him to let go of pre-learned material and respond to the moment, even if it meant playing less.

🛠️ Technical & Musical Practice Strategies:

Left-hand only playing
- Reinforces pulse, syncs with bass, removes RH complexity.
Whistling improvisation
- Builds right-brain creativity while left hand maintains form.
Slow, deep breathing while playing
- Grounds timing and regulates nervous system.
Listening before acting
- Let the band initiate momentum; intentionally share responsibility for driving the form.
Improvise with fewer preconceived ideas
- Focus on real-time creation, not recalling lines.

💬 Personal Breakthroughs:

Peter expressed nervousness at the start, but visibly relaxed as the session progressed.
He experienced real-time awareness of the ensemble pushing the form, and began to allow himself to trust the rhythm section.
By the end, he played with more clarity, beauty, and presence—and said it was the best part of his day.

✅ Closing Reflection:

This session offered a powerful example of how playing less, listening more, and staying present can unlock musical depth—especially in slow, emotionally open tunes like “Infant Eyes.” Peter’s commitment to staying in the discomfort zone led to meaningful progress, both musically and mentally.

“You’re doing the work right now. This is it.”
