@Jonny Sterling Recap summary for you! 🎹 Rhythm Section Session Recap – Aug 24, 2025 Student: Jonny Rhythm Section: Gonzalo (bass), Dru (drums) Facilitator: Peter 🌟 Focus of the Session: Jonny explored two contrasting tunes— “Juicy Lucy” , a bluesy, modern hard bop piece, and “Isfahan” , a lyrical ballad from the Ellington/Strayhorn canon. The session emphasized melody interpretation, voicing clarity, ensemble interaction, and personal artistic identity . 🎵 Part 1: "Juicy Lucy" 🎯 Focus Areas: Personal phrasing and stylistic interpretation, influenced by Phineas Newborn. Voicing exploration still in progress; some harmonic moments intentionally left open or worked through in real time. Jonny acknowledged the tune was still in development and not yet performance-ready—but showed strong intention and curiosity. 🧭 Musical Details: Try to change LH habit of 1-5-7 shells to 1-3-7 Watch out for that RH thumb creeping in with extra notes when you're playing melodies. When you develop motifs it's very fun and creates interaction with the band and interest for a listener! Don't abandon development after one or two bars...why not go for a whole section on one idea? 🎧 Takeaways: It's cool to test “unfinished” tunes in real time—playing through evolving material in the trio setting builds real-world fluency. Focus future practice on: Solidifying voicings Nailing the harmonic rhythm and melodic phrasing Clarifying inner voice movement Also, for your improv--practice singing and then playing only what you sing with your RH melodies. 🎵 Part 2: "Isfahan" 🌹 Tone & Feel: A beautiful contrast to the first tune—Jonny brought out touch sensitivity and expressive lyricism , showing depth and restraint. The tune offered a more melodic and spacious canvas , highlighting Jonny’s ability to listen, shape, and support the trio. 💡 Points of Emphasis: Melody ownership : This tune calls for clarity and reverence in phrasing. There was a strong emotional connection, with room to grow into a deeper sense of control and contour. Interaction with the rhythm section : Jonny navigated space well, listening closely to Gonzalo and Dru, and showing growth in his timing and responsiveness. 🛠️ Suggestions for Growth: Shape the arc of the melody from beginning to end—consider breath, line, and timing. Let soloing grow naturally from the melody, using fewer notes and more patience. Continue practicing with recording or play-along to refine phrase placement. 🧠 Mindset Reflections: Jonny expressed a healthy level of humility and honesty about where he’s at in the process. He stayed engaged and open, even when navigating voicing discomfort, unfamiliar pianos, or uncertain form moments. There was visible enjoyment in playing with the rhythm section—this wasn’t about perfection, but presence and progress. ✅ Practice Goals Moving Forward: Clarify Voicing Vocabulary for “Juicy Lucy” Develop Motifs in Arrangement and Improv on Both Tunes Refine Melody Phrasing in “Isfahan” Record and Reflect : Use video/audio review to catch phrasing, voicing, and rhythmic placement. Play with Others : Continue testing these tunes in trio or duo settings to solidify feel and flow. 💬 Final Reflection: This session showed Jonny in active relationship with the music —exploring sound, searching for clarity, and balancing control with vulnerability. With two very different tunes, he demonstrated flexibility, taste, and evolving personal voice.
